Yabun 2020 Poster
Yabun is an annual festival taking place on the lands of the Gadigal people AKA Sydney. Its origins stem from the Day of Mourning protest that started in 1938 (150 years of occupation) and the Survival Day protests of 1988 (200 years of occupation).
The design references the old arcade game, Space Invaders.
As we were exploring the literal interpretation of the game and how it applies to the experience of First Nations people of this country we decided not to participate in the very obvious narrative of good guy bad guy, us and them rhetoric. Instead we excluded all references to the colonisers and made it about us taking back space.
In our universe or alternate reality there are no oppressors, we have Aboriginal spaceships, shapeshifting time travelling spirit dingos, all our past ones walk beside us and gunyins are banished to a planet plagued by consequences :)
Feel welcome to print out the poster. Koori Radio are selling Tshirts and we have a limited edition screen print for sale in our store.
